Shayma Kamel is an Egyptian painter and mixed media artist, born in 1980 in Giza City and living in Dahab. Shayma got her bachelor degree in psychology from Ain Shams University Cairo in 2002. Her passion for art led her to painting, while she was still at university. Shayma’s first solo exhibition was in 2004, with a body of work focused on personal and family issues. Afterwards, her work developed quickly to highlight issues related to politics and society. Shayma exhibited in Bahrain, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, France, The Netherlands, Greece, USA, Germany, Jordan and Lebanon.
Shayma Kamel, who has no formal art education, captures the essence of the Egyptian persona through paintings that simultaneously haunt and enchant. This contradiction is the central theme and her conceptual backbone.
Shayma’s work is centred around women and their challenges in Arab societies generally and in Cairo and Beirut in particular by using different media and techniques. She seems to imply that the contradiction between image and reality comes from these imported images coming up against the realities of a conservative society. This tension takes starker form, and while there are key differences, it is not all that different in some essential ways. Juxtaposing reality and fantasy to point out contradictions in contemporary society is one main theme in Shayma's work.
