Contemporary Egyptian artist Mahmoud Salem at the opening of 'Ouda - Return in March 2023
Mahmoud Salem is an Egyptian Sculptor from Luxor. He discovered his delight in creating sculptures already as a child by using mud. Autodidactically, he worked with different materials and created with the simplest tools artworks from clay, wood and stone while constantly enhancing his techniques. Now, he uses hardwood and stone to craft sculptures by hand.
Mahmoud's work is not only influenced by the ancient monuments and sculptures on the west bank of Luxor but also by the places and environments of rural Egypt and the current life problems encountered by ordinary Egyptians regardless of where they live. He says:
"I am heavily influenced by my forefathers, generation upon generation of amazing artists and sculptors, who created with their hands, a way of life and which stands till this day. As with them, I wish for my sculpture to exist for as long as possible without breaking or being destroyed, and it is for this reason that I use hardwood and stone, shaping them with small electronic and handheld tools."

"Art began with me as a passionate attraction without knowing its name or nature, yet it filled up my innermost feelings. All that caught my attention, others hardly ever noticed, as I thought this was just a matter of difference in interests or inclinations. I gradually practiced artwork as a set of complementing steps starting from the fermentation of the idea, passing through the selection of materials and tools, into implementation, with the total conviction that sincerity and purity should be reached when crossing each stage. The exceptional surrounding environment, encompassing unique nature, history, and humans, was the inimitable source of inspiration with ideas and questions that turned into sculptures and works of art. This environment was also inspiring in addressing the challenges met during the implementation of my artwork. I believe that Art is a cause that an artist should embrace truthfully so that Art is respected and is evidence of the nation’s progress, renaissance, and history to add to the account. Through various experiments with materials, the local materials were the closest to my passion and the realization of my sculptures. Wood and granite have become the dominant materials in all my works, and through them, I achieve artwork that carries originality, innovation, depth, and plainness without negatively affecting it. Ultimately, the result is a pure work of art stemming from the unique environment with a contemporary and singular treatment." Mahmoud Salem
