Alaa Abu el-Hamd
Contemporary Egyptian artist Alaa Abu el-Hamd at the "Paradise" exhibition in Luxor, 2018
The award-winning artist Alaa Abu el-Hamd was born in Qena in 1979. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Luxor and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Cairo, Port Said, Alexandria and Luxor since 2000.
Alaa's subjects are inspired by the ancient Egyptian murals and carvings in the tombs and temples of magnificent Thebes, nowadays known as Luxor. His paintings show the relationship between gods and objects, between men and women. They are characterised by their stillness and strength. Alaa focuses on the pure souls, into which the viewer is drawn by the ebony eyes of his figures. The silence of their colours gives the impression that they are alive.
Alaa Abu el-Hamd is an artist, who is profoundly touched by nature and the culture surrounding him in Luxor, which in turn is deeply rooted in the eternity of the ancient Egyptian art and the mythology behind: the Fields of Aaru, the heavenly paradise, where Osiris rules and the souls live for eternity; the myths of the divine couple of Isis and Osiris and the everlasting love story between man and woman, upon which the whole Egyptian civilisation was built.
However, Alaa is also inspired by the daily village life and the mural paintings, which were painted on the walls layer by layer for generations. Sometimes, the old colours shine through - like in Alaa's paintings.
