Afaf Salah al-Din Ahmed was born in June 1956. She discovered her passion for painting early in life and enrolled on an academy of fine arts. After three months of studying painting, her father visited her. The deep gap between the Upper-Egyptian traditions and the modern artistic life on the academy caused him to take her out. Instead, he brought her to a health institute in Assiut, where she studied radiology.
Afaf married, raised children, worked as a radiologist in Aswan. Many years later, the working years were over and the children had left the house to start their own families. Facing a feeling of loneliness, exactly on 15 May 2019, at the age of almost 63, Afaf's desire to paint and her actual destination resurfaced and she started painting again. Since then, many paintings came into being, captivating the viewer by their vibrant, expressive colours and the naive artistic style, showing a childlike simplicity and frankness. Afaf's works show scenes of a life that is threatened to disappear in the modern world.
