Mervat Shazly about the woman figure in her art:

"Art is what drives out all the hidden aspects of a human soul, especially for an artist. And for me, what inspired my art is the diverse universe of femininity with its common and repressed emotions and thoughts and the desire for self-accomplishment in life’s tedious paths with all that influences them.
Femininity is a special concept for me emanating from honesty and the southern environment with its specificity and values and symbols rooted in history.
The woman figure has been central to my work since its beginning when my artistic expression was imbued with an academic touch and the subject matter was essential. And then with time and my yearning to evolve and move into more modern realms of artistic expression, the relationship between visual elements developed and colour beheld the upper hand in the overall artwork structure and the symbols with their meanings fused with the composition, creating a simpler and more streamlined artistic language allowing to approach the female figure in a natural and abstract manner rather than purely representational.
Instinctive expressionism has become my way to deepen my artistic character through numerous artistic experiments with varying materials and colour schemes. However, my favourite subject matter that is reflected in most of my work remains the female figure and the woman’s innate emotions in her relationship with the man and the society in the south."
